Much of Indiana took the day after Christmas off as a rare blizzard swirled across the state Wednesday, dumping snow deep enough to strand snowplows in some areas and making travel treacherous for those returning home from holiday visits.
OFF THE ROAD: Chris Spicer of M & M Towing, pulls a car out of a ditch at Clifty Drive and Ivy Tech Drive on his first call of the day Wednesday morning. Though the local storm did not live up to the blizzard warnings that were issued Tuesday, the snow and ice that did fall in the Courierarea made driving difficult. (Staff photo by Ken Ritchie)

KEEPING THE ROADS SAFE: Steve Jackson reloads Clarence Nolan’s truck with salt at the Indiana Department of Transportation garage at Jefferson Proving Ground, just before the end of their midnight-to-noon shift. Most of the snowfall ended by late afternoon in Madison, leaving the area with only a fraction of the snow received in other parts of the state that were hit by the storm.
