  • Hairy backs, legs, shoulders and chests were exposed to unsettling degrees as 56 men competed in the 2007 Miss America of Hope (Womanless) Pageant at Carroll County High School on Saturday night to raise money for the American Cancer Society. The pageant had some of the best-known and powerful men in the Carrollton, Ky., area — including First Baptist Church Pastor Chris White, Carrollton Mayor Dwight Louden and Carroll County Sheriff Ben Smith — sporting pumps, augmented chests and wigs for the charity. The Carroll County Relay for Life Committee organized the event, which was emceed by Heather French Henry, the 2000 Miss America and wife of former Lt. Gov. Steve Henry. All proceeds from the event will go toward the 2007 Carroll County Relay for Life goal of $75,000. Last year the Relay for Life raised $64,219.

  • Growing old is like a quilt. The patchwork and vibrancy of its colors mimic the health, stamina and drive left in an individual. For Helen Kreeger of Hanover, who recently celebrated her 90th birthday, the patterns are cleverly woven and varied; designs rich and hues as vivid as a box of Crayolas. Even at 90.
