Deputy firehouse burns

  • Members of the Deputy Fire Company were able to get one of the company’s four trucks out of the structure before the smoke became too much for them in a fire this morning that appears to have destroyed the structure and caused significant equipment damage. The firefighters were on the scene within minutes of receiving the call that their firehouse was burning, but because they did not have gear when they arrived, the smoke became too much for them. Capt. Keith Hartman of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said there are no reported injuries at this time. He said firefighters told him the fire appears to have started in the attic. The building was empty when the blaze began. As of about 2 p.m. fire crews were packing up their gear to leave as the Red Cross passed out water and snacks to first responders.
