Oh Christmas tree...

Madison’s official Christmas tree, an 18-foot, 800-pound blue spruce, was cut down from the front yard of Doris and Nick Wyne’s home on Montclair Street on Friday. The tree was then taken to the Broadway Fountain and erected near Main Street by workers from the city and Heitz Sign Company. Doris Wyne said she and her husband planted the tree when they moved into their home about 20 years ago. She said they decided to donate the tree to the city because it was too big for their yard. The tree will be decorated in time for the Light Up Madison event at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 13.

Brigid Kaelin, of Louisville, uses everything from the guitar and accordion to a saw to accompany her singing in what she describes as “Alt-Country Cabaret” on the second day of the 2009 Ohio River Valley Folk Festival at Bicentennial Park on Saturday.
Fans dealt with discouraging bouts of rain in between pockets of sunshine Saturday.
Glen Spencer, and his daughters, Ava, 3, left, and Olivia, 6, wait for the youngsters from Lydia Middleton, Southwestern and Pope John elementary schools — including Ava and Olivia’s siblings Grace and Nathan — to perform original songs written for the city of Madison’s Bicentennial celebration.
The songs were written by students and Canadian singer and songwriter Katherine Wheatley last year and include songs about the railroad incline, the Madison Regatta and more. The children were accompanied at their Folk Festival performance by Wheatley on guitar and Brook Reindollar on trombone and trumpet.

The rain didn’t chase away all of the fans at the fourth annual Ohio River Valley Folk Festival on Friday. Though the early crowd wasn’t large, some remained to enjoy the music that played into the night.
Paul Burch & The WPA Ballclub, Richard Shindell, and The Kennedys took the stage Friday playing guitars, accordions and violins as the crowd cheered from their damp fold-up chairs.
Also, performing Friday was Tom Cunningham of Louisville. During his “Fiddletales,” a small crowd listened to him play his fiddle and tell a story.
