EVANSVILLE — With the way Jimmy King was running away, Jeff Bernard didn’t think he had any chance at victory. But when the propeller broke on King’s U-3 Master Tire on lap three, the door was open for Bernard and the 24-year-old burst through, holding off teammate J. Michael Kelly to win a controversial Thunder on the Ohio Unlimited hydroplane race in Evansville Sunday.

EVANSVILLE — Maybe watermelons are bad luck after all. During Saturday’s qualifying session, the U-1 Oh Boy! Oberto/Miss Madison and U-16 Miss Elam Plus teams had a little fun with the old boat racing superstition, trading a watermelon back and forth between their respective pits in a good-natured attempt to jinx the other. By Sunday night, neither team was laughing. The Miss Elam Plus flipped in Sunday’s Heat 1A, essentially ending its weekend and the Oh Boy! Oberto paid the price, drawing two penalties in the incident.

Villwock change-up puts Elam on inside track to his eighth Gold Cup. DETROIT, Mich. — Dave Villwock is a die-hard Seattle Mariners fan. So it was no surprise to see him revert to a baseball cliché when describing his final heat strategy. “Everybody expects us to come out throwing heaters,” said Villwock. “Well, today, we threw them a change-up.”
Villwock pulled out of the pits at the start the final heat and parked his U-16 Miss Elam Plus right in lane one. He never completed a warm-up lap and was barely even under his own power. For more than five minutes, he sat in the Detroit River, essentially allowing the current to carry him down-stream.
