Josh Kernen, a building trades student at Madison Consolidated High School, measures the top of a wall before his classmates can cut and install a cross plate support beam on a house they are building on West Third Street. A floor plan and an artist’s rendering are posted on a beam at the front of the house, left. The building trades program has about 24 junior and senior students combined from a morning and an afternoon class. They are building a modified shotgun-style house with two bedrooms, two bathrooms and about 1,200 square feet of space. The project is to be completed by May 2010, before the MCHS graduation.

The Army Corps of Engineers has installed bulkheads and drained the water from the 1,200-foot-long main lock chamber of the Markland Dam and Locks so that repairs can be made to the damaged lower leaf gate. One leaf was removed and placed on a barge for inspection and repairs. The fallen gate, still at the bottom of the lock chamber, should be removed this week. While the leaves are tended to, welders are also making other repairs.
